If you’re a grown-up, it can be hard to know what small people are ‘into’, as mother Patrice recently wrote on the North Shore Mums Facebook group.  She asked, ‘Mums of 5 yr old girls, what are they into? Need to buy a present for a 5 yr old girl today and need ideas!’ So whether you’re buying for a niece or your daughter, or a friend’s little girl, if you want to see a smile on the face of the five-year-old (or thereabouts!) in your life, try one of these brilliant gift ideas- all suggested by North Shore Mums, who say they’re big hits with little people.

Top 12 present ideas suggested by North Shore mums…

  1. Rachel: A school bag for the start of school. ‘I bought a school bag from Pottery Barn for my friend’s 5 year-old daughter. I thought it would be a lovely gift as she will be attending ‘real school’ soon!’
  2. Cindy: Music boxes, or fill your own box with items such as glitter and glue for a ‘Decorate-Your-Own’ jewellery box. ‘I got my niece a music box, she loved it. Also bought a friend’s daughter a decorate your own jewellery box, she also loved that.’
  3. Florence: Dress-up costumes, such as characters from Frozen. ‘For mine, anything with sparkles that she can wear.’
  4. Vanessa: Anything grown-up! ‘Handbags, things to prep for school e.g. a purse, nail polish, books.’
  5. Jessica: Craft projects or DIY kits. ‘Mine loved the ‘colour-in-your-own’ cushion from IKEA that she was given.’ Fellow mum Kirsten agrees, saying ‘Craft kits are great. My daughter was given 4 different ones for her 5th birthday!’ and Diana says ‘Crafty things like make your own headbands’ are  huge hit with young girls
  6. Sally-Ann: Collectible toys like Shopkins or Beanie Boos. ‘Beanie Boos! They are mad for them at my daughter’s school.’
  7. Jessica: Books. ‘Classics like Heidi, Pippi Longstocking, Little House in the Big Woods are great.’
  8. Caroline: Stationery. ‘The Smiggle craze has started in my house!’ Fellow mum Christina also recommends stationery, writing, ‘Can’t go wrong.’
  9. Natalie: An outdoor experience. ‘We’ve got an almost 6 year old [and we got her a] horse riding lesson.’
  10. Jessica: Games the whole family can play together. ‘The card game UNO is excellent for that age.’
  11. Cindy: Problem-solving games. ‘My niece loves Goldie Blocks games I like encouraging her scientific/engineering side too!’
  12. Sutheray: Educational toys, like an ‘easy-read time-teaching watch.’
