Halloween is just around the corner (Monday 31 October 2022). Whilst some kids love to wander the streets to Trick or Treat, there are plenty of other ways that you can celebrate Halloween if you don’t want to knock on doors. Here are some fun ways to celebrate Halloween in 2022!

Every year, Halloween seems to get more and more popular in Australia. On Sydney’s North Shore, many suburbs have become ‘hot spots’ for Trick or Treating. Scary decorations adorn the houses, bowls of lollies are dipped into and collected by children dressed up in all manner of scary (or cute) costumes.

The afternoon turns into a festival of sugar as neighbours come outside to chat and join in the fun. It’s a great way to connect with your community and meet neighbours!

But not everyone likes to Trick or Treat. So if you don’t want to knock on doors, here are some other ways you can celebrate Halloween (without Trick or Treat-ing).

Fun ideas to celebrate Halloween

1. Have a Halloween Party at home

Plan some fun spooky games… like wrap a friend in loo roll so they look like a Mummy!

Why not invite some friends over after childcare or school, and have a mini Halloween party! You can

  • Decorate the house in a spooky theme
  • Get everyone to dress up
  • Serve spooky-themed food.
  • Have a look on Spotify for a Halloween playlist!
  • Play some Halloween games

2. Scary Movie Night

Watch a scary movie with family or friends!

If it’s raining on Halloween evening in 2022 and too wet to Trick or Treat, why not jump inside for a movie night? You can still dress up, gather on the couch and put together a list of the scariest flicks everyone can enjoy. Grab the popcorn and the lollies and get the films rolling. There are lots of scary movies streaming on the popular apps like NetflixStanDisney+ and Amazon Prime.

3. Halloween Treasure Hunt

Do a Halloween Treasure Hunt at home!

A Halloween Treasure Hunt is a fun activity for kids to do at home. Print off the clues, cut them up and hide sweet treats around your home. Round up the kids and send them on the hunt. Its family fun everyone can get involved with, with plenty of sugar for motivation.

4. Lollies scattered on the front garden & driveway

If you want to treat the kids in the neighbourhood to sweets, but don’t want lots of families turning up to your front door, the perfect solution is lollies scattered on your front garden or driveway!

Since Covid lockdowns, the idea of lots of sticky hands in a lolly bowl aren’t so hygienic, but that doesn’t mean you can’t give out lollies to the kids in your neighbourhood! Get creative and adorn your driveway or front garden with individually wrapped lollies. Kids can come up and grab their own and everyone’s hands stay to themselves. It’s trick or treating with a little twist to it.

5. Spooky walk in the neighbourhood, with BYO lollies

If you don’t want to Trick or Treat, you can still wander the neighbourhood to soak up the spooky community atmosphere.. and BYO lollies.

Let the kids dress up in their costumes (this is the fun part after all) and head out to the street to show them off. Instead of letting the kids collect lollies from the neighbours, simply give them a wave and bring your own lollies to fill up their bags. Lollies are lollies after all, no matter where they come from.

6. Decorate your house in a spooky style!

Forgoing the tradition of door-knocking for lollies, doesn’t mean we have to do away with the fun (and scariness) of Halloween. Get the kids involved in pulling out all the decorations and making your home as scary as possible… on the inside or the outside!

7. Host a Spooky Dinner Party

Get the family together for a scary dinner party, with lots of delicious themed foods to suit the occasion. Put everyone in charge of one spooky dish and let their creativity run wild with it. It’s the perfect excuse to dress up in costume and keep the spooky spirit alive in small numbers.
