Summer in Australia is about sunshine, swimming and slowing down. But if reading slows down too, children can lose valuable momentum. Importantly, regular engagement with literacy (everyday reading, journaling, following written instructions) helps children practise their skills. That’s why education experts encourage weaving reading into holiday life. And when families want extra support, MultiLit Literacy Centres at Macquarie Park offers structured, personalised programs that keep young readers moving forward while still enjoying their break.

MultiLit Literacy Centres at Macquarie Park can help by turning your child’s summer break into a confidence-building stretch of purposeful, personalised reading practice, without sacrificing the fun of the holidays. MultiLit provides evidence-based, one-to-one literacy instruction for children from pre-school through secondary, delivered in-centre or live online.

Why momentum matters over summer

When a child’s literacy skills lag behind those of their peers, they may continue to fall behind in other academic areas, which can affect their well-being. The good news is that reading outcomes are stronger when families weave reading into daily life and support children to choose books they genuinely enjoy.

Setting aside 15–20 minutes for reading most days, visiting libraries for fresh choices, or reading somewhere different – like in the garden or a blanket fort – are some ways to sustain progress over the holidays.

Holiday programs that keep skills and confidence growing

For families who need extra support to progress, MultiLit Literacy Centres offer two flexible one-to-one holiday options designed to maintain (and accelerate) reading momentum.

MultiLit’s Holiday Boost Program

The Holiday Boost Program is for steady consolidation and maintenance of skills. It consists of one 50-minute lesson each day during the summer holidays (for a minimum of 2 weeks). Students complete a placement test before commencing to ensure the right program is offered, and families receive a progress summary at the end of the program. It is available in-centre or online from 8:00 am onwards, excluding public holidays.

MultiLit’s Holiday Intensive Program

For students who need intervention but have busy schedules during the term, the Holiday Intensive Program consists of four 50-minute lessons per day over a minimum of two weeks (typically 8 am–12 pm or 1 pm–5 pm), with supervised breaks, an assessment before commencing, and a detailed progress summary afterwards. It is available in-centre or online.

What sets MultiLit’s tutoring apart

MultiLit’s tutoring process is thorough, transparent and tailored – so families know exactly how literacy skills are being strengthened:

  • Start with clarity. The Macquarie Park literacy experts will conduct an initial exploratory phone call to understand your child’s needs, followed by a comprehensive 2-hour assessment of current literacy skills. Parents then join a 30-minute meeting with the Centre Manager – an experienced literacy and education specialist – to review results, discuss recommendations and receive a detailed written report.
  • Consistent, expert instruction. Your child is matched with dedicated tutors for continuity, supported by a Senior Tutor and overseen weekly by the Centre Manager. There is also additional expert oversight by MultiLit’s leadership and research teams to ensure the highest instructional standards.
  • Progress visibility. You will receive feedback at the end of each lesson, access to an eLibrary and carefully matched home-reading books. Also benefit from a 10% discount on The Bookshop by MultiLit for storybooks that align with your child’s level and interests.
  • Programs mapped to real needs. Depending on assessment results, lessons draw on programs like MiniLit Sage, Reading Tutor Program (RTP), Word Attack Extension (WAS-Ex), MacqLit and others – covering phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, oral language and spelling in a structured, explicit way.

This approach is grounded in decades of research and has demonstrated impact. Analysis has shown that students who were behind in their literacy skills made substantial improvements with the MultiLit Literacy Centres programs over two terms. On average, students made gains of:

  • 13 months in word reading
  • 13 months in spelling
  • 18 months in decoding
  • 13 months in passage reading accuracy
  • 11 months in passage reading comprehension.

Make summer reading easy and enjoyable.

You do not need to turn the holidays into ‘school at home’. A few practical habits make a big difference:

  • Create a relaxed daily reading moment. Post-swim, post-dinner or pre-bed – consistency wins. Every-day reading (recipes, instructions, game rules) counts, too.
  • Let kids choose. Children’s reading thrives when they pick books that match their interests and level.
  • Leverage libraries. Free eBooks, audiobooks and librarian recommendations keep variety high during travel or downtime.
  • Add a goal. Reward consistent behaviour with a new book or a simple treat.
