We’re congratulating the wonderful North Shore Mum photographer Naomi Reiter from Naomi Reiter Photography on winning a huge award for her stunning work, and to celebrate we’re bringing you her favourite family shots…plus her tips on how to capture that perfect family photo!

Roseville photographer Naomi Reiter won the 2017 AIPP NSW Family Professional Photographer of the Year prize at the AIPP NSW Epson Professional Photography Awards! In other words, she’s been rated the best family photographer in NSW. Amazing! Here’s what she had to share with NSM…

What do you love most about photographing families?

I love meeting new people and relish the challenge of capturing their personalities and telling a little story about them in a few small moments. I know I have an important responsibility to deliver beautiful photos and I have never been disappointed when seeing the wonderfully happy reactions when they first view them. If they are happy then so am I!

What’s your favourite location(s) on the North Shore?

My favourites are the ones that are meaningful to my clients. The North Shore (and further afield) is brimming with beautiful places and I always look for spots that offer great lighting and beautiful backdrops that complement my families.

What’s the secret to getting children to relax?

I spend time to get to know them a little beforehand and I work with them rather than expect them to work with me. We always have fun on shoots, (even on ones that don’t go quite to plan) and I will often be swamped at the end of a shoot with hugs and high fives from happy kids. I recall one little girl asking me if I could go home with their family!

What makes a good photo?

Relax, have fun, be yourselves and bring a happy attitude…and surprisingly important, a couple of light snacks for the kids.

Why do you think it’s important families get photographed professionally?

While everyone has access to a handy camera these days, all too often they are in phones or on Automatic mode. A professional photographer knows how to use their camera out of auto mode like it’s second nature, allowing them to concentrate on creativity, composition and their lighting knowledge to create the highest quality photos and beautiful memories for their client. A professional takes time to get to know their clients individually and deliver the results they have been looking for in their final products. Continuing education in their craft, high end equipment and software is part of their every day and this enables them to deliver photographs to the highest possible standard. And using a professional, you can also make sure EVERYONE is in front of the lens and is a part of the captured moment in time that will be treasured forever.

What’s the biggest mistake people make with pictures they take themselves?

If I had a dollar for everyone who had said to me ‘it would have been a nice photo, but it was out of focus’ I’d have saved enough for a new lens!!

Matching outfits- yes or no?

Every family is different and if matching outfits complement their personality then go for it! I recommend to try for clothes that are comfortable and in a simple colour palette of one or two colours or a few similar hues that are complementary. It’s also important to consider the colour choices will fit with the style of their home, after all when they are on the wall they are there to be treasured and enjoyed not cringed at because of unfortunate clothing choices.
