If you’re planning on crossing the Sydney Harbour Bridge on Sunday, you might need to reconsider your route or timing, as major scenes are being filmed for a new movie starring Ryan Gosling.

This Sunday 22 January, motorists, cyclists and pedestrians will be unable to cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge, as Ryan Gosling and his stunt double will be using the Sydney landmark to film action scenes for The Fall Guy.

All north and south bound lanes will be closed between 3am and10 am, with a broader exclusion zone from 5:30am that could also interrupt boat and ferry traffic.

What alternative routes are available?

Although the bridge is closed, the Sydney Harbour Tunnel will remain open the whole time – though expect delays due to the limited route. Another option for driving across is the Gladesville Bridge.

“It is great to see our iconic infrastructure on the global stage, but we urge motorists to avoid the area or postpone travel until after 10 am if possible. While the tunnel will stay open, delays are expected on detour routes. Motorists, including operators of freight and oversize vehicles, can also consider using Victoria Rd and Gladesville Bridge as an alternative.” – Howard Collins, Transport for NSW Acting Deputy Secretary Greater Sydney

Trains will continue to operate across the Sydney Harbour Bridge while it is closed to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.

What will be closed on Sunday?

The Sydney Harbour Bridge will be closed to cars, bikes & pedestrians

  • The Cahill Expressway Circular Quay Overpass – closed from 1am to 12:30pm on Sunday 22 January. The walkway will be closed from 2:30am – 12:30 pm.
  • The Sydney Harbour Bridge cycleway and footpath will close from 5.30 am to 10 am.
  • A Sydney Harbour Exclusion Zone will also be in effect from 5.30 am to 10 am. Pedestrians and cyclists are advised to avoid the area while closures are in place.

How will roads be affected?

Local roads beneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge will be closed  from 5;30am-10am – in Dawes Point and Milsons Point/Kirribilli, including sections of Hickson Rd, Alfred St South and Olympic Drive.

Buses will terminate on either side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge ( in the Sydney CBD and North Sydney) from 3 am to 10 am. Customers can catch trains to continue their trip.

All citybound traffic from the Western Distributor will detour via the Bathurst St off-ramp, and all traffic accessing the Western Distributor from Fig and Pyrmont streets will detour via the King St off-ramp.

Special event clearway parking restrictions will be in effect from 3 am to 10am on key roads in North Sydney and from 6 am to 10 am in the Sydney CBD – motorists should check signs carefully to avoid being towed.

About The Fall Guy

Ryan Gosling

The Fall Guy is an upcoming American action film which stars Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. It is a big-budget remake of the 1980s TV series of the same name.

Ryan plays the role of Colt Seavers, a battered and past-his-prime stuntman who finds himself working on a movie set with the star for whom he doubled long ago and who replaced him. The star then goes missing.

The film is due to release in 2024.

How does this affect the local economy?

The Fall Guy will inject $244 million into the local economy, having received a $30 million grant from the Federal Government and $15 million from the NSW Government.

The movie has employed more than 1000 Australian cast and crew members, plus 3000 Australian “extras”, according to Communications Minister Paul Fletcher.
