As the weather warms up, a new ‘Eat Street’ is launching on Sydney’s North Shore. St Johns Avenue in Gordon has undergone a major upgrade to make it a much more desirable location for outdoor dining.
Work has been completed on an upgrade to St Johns Avenue in Gordon, with the aim of making it a long term venue for outdoor dining.
Ku-ring-gai Council developed the idea of an ‘eat street’ after consultation with residents and businesses in the St Johns Avenue and Henry Street area of Gordon.
The result is new landscaped terraces with seating, widened footpaths, street furniture, new paving and an improved layout for outdoor dining.
Features to make the area more pedestrian friendly include raised crossings at Clipsham Lane, Henry Street and Churchill Lane and improvements to kiss & ride areas.
An innovative feature of the upgrade are three charging tables so visitors can charge their devices while in the area. The chargers will be activated later this year, along with new lighting.
The upgrade follows the improvements to Gordon station and an influx of new cafes and eateries in the area.
Mayor Jeff Pettett said the Council had a goal of creating a focal point for the local community to socialise during lunchtimes and after work.
“The area is attracting a lot more passers-by and it will help local businesses if people are encouraged to linger longer and spend money.” – Jeff Petett, Mayor of Gordon.
The Mayor added that further work will be undertaken on Heritage Square near the station, with the aim of making the park more attractive and accessible.
The eateries along St Johns Avenue in Gordon run from Gordon station up to the Pacific Highway.
