We’re starting a new feature on North Shore Mums whereby day care centres, preschools and all other primary and secondary schools can brag about interesting things they’ve been doing in the classroom. First up, we have Kindy Kids St Ives long day care and preschool, whose little attendees have been hatching chicks!

One of the children’s favourite experiences so far this year was the Living Eggs program we did in March.

The excitement of the children watching the eggs hatch and then being able to hold a tiny chick in their hands was overwhelming. The children learned about the lifecycle of the chicks and how to care and look after them. This learning brought out their natural curiosity and encouraged their thinking. It was a wonderful experience shared by staff, the children and their families at the centre.

We were very lucky to be able to watch the eggs hatching during the centre’s operating hours. After they had all hatched over the week, some of the adoring families volunteered to take the fluffy chicks home and watch them grow!

The chickens have been a source of curiosity and amazement. The children spent ages waiting for the white and brown eggs to hatch, then watching in pure joy as the tiny chicks cracked out of their shells one by one…

Is that one hatching?!!!!

There were lot of smiles as the children pat or held the soft chicks. They also loved listening to the chickens as they all chirped and hopped around their cosy heated home.

We made a wall chart to show when each of the eggs hatched. On Monday there were 10 eggs and on Friday there were 10 chickens – eight yellow and two black!
