Currambena is a democratic school on Cammeraygal land on the North Shore of Sydney that offers truly child-centred education for both pre- and primary school children. Established 55 years ago and based on strong research foundations, we have long been recognised as a leader in innovative educational thinking. At Currambena we deliver a holistic approach to learning, with the help of a flexible curriculum which focuses on developing a child’s skills for life as well as academic results.
Since 1969, Currambena has led the way in progressive education, nurturing young minds to become confident, creative thinkers. Here, learning is a boundless adventure, where children are encouraged to explore, question, and discover at their own pace. With our small class sizes and personalised approach, Currambena cultivates a nurturing environment where each child’s unique talents and interests are celebrated, fostering a lifelong love for exploration and discovery. Every child receives the attention they need to flourish academically and emotionally. Research shows that this kind of environment stimulates a long-term love of learning as well as a holistically developed and resilient child. Through our dynamic blend of stage-based learning and democratic principles, students emerge as empowered, self-assured individuals ready to embrace the challenges of tomorrow. Join our warm, inclusive community, and embark on a journey of lifelong learning and growth.

Currambena Primary School is open for enrolments for Kindergarten 2025.

We joined the Currambena playgroup when my daughter was three years old, while she was attending the Steiner preschool in Willoughby. Though I am a great admirer of the Steiner approach, the primary school fees in Sydney were quite steep. After experiencing Currambena, we decided to transfer her there. The education style at Currambena is reminiscent of Steiner, with a strong emphasis on play, nature, experiential learning, and an extensive craft program.
My daughter quickly fell in love with the school and her teachers, one of whom is a regular on the TV show “Playschool.” She is always eager to go to school and often doesn’t want to leave! She has truly blossomed, gaining confidence through experiences like chairing class meetings and enjoying a sense of autonomy that is rare for her age.
When it was time to choose a primary school, we considered other local options, but none compared to Currambena. She is now halfway through Kindergarten, and we have already applied for our son to start preschool in 2026.
I love that the school is small, with only about 80 children from preschool to Year 6, fostering a close-knit community where everyone knows and interacts with each other. It’s common to see children of different ages mixing, and we’ve never encountered any issues with bullying.
The community has welcomed our family with open arms. Although my partner was initially sceptical, he has come around and now appreciates the benefits of the school’s philosophy.
