It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for… Rumours have spread that well-known supermarket chain Aldi are set to jump on the home delivery bandwagon in order to keep up with their major rivals, Coles and Woolworths – and we’re here for it! Here’s everything you need to know about what’s to come for online shopping at Aldi.

Keeping costs down at Aldi

So, first thing’s first, are the rumours true?

At a parliamentary inquiry on Monday, Aldi corporate affairs representative Adrian Christie said the German-owned chain had so far resisted an online presence in a bid to keep grocery costs down.

“You will see us entering that space in the future. I think there is significant share moving into the online space.” – Adrian Christie

Mr Christie said the challenge for Aldi was to go online while trying to keep its prices at between 15 and 20 per cent below those of its competitors.

Let’s be honest, we all love the low prices they have on offer.

Aldi online trial

Going online isn’t entirely foreign to Aldi.

Last year, they ran a trial where shoppers could purchase some of its Special Buys items online, but that ended in August 2022. At the time, a spokesperson said that while the trial provided valuable insight, it “wasn’t the right time to expand”.

Almost half (48%) of Australian consumers are already doing some food shopping online, while almost 15 per cent have switched to ordering most or all of their groceries on the internet (source: Australia Online Grocery Study and Report 2022).

When can we start shopping online with Aldi?

On Monday, Adrian Christie did hint at plans to expand online, saying Aldi need to enter into the online shopping space to keep a sustainable business model to compete with Coles and Woolworths. But there are no immediate plans for this to happen.

“While we are always looking at the environment and considering an online experience, we won’t bring this forward until we have a model where associated overheads of eCommerce in no way compromises our ability to deliver low priced groceries to Australians.”

Sadly, there is no date for when you can start adding your favourite products to cart online! As much as we would love to see Aldi burst into the online world, it won’t be happening in the immediate future. But the good news? We can continue to enjoy their low costs in-store.
