Have you got overnight guests coming? Here’s some tips and tricks to turn your guest bedroom into a warm and inviting retreat.

1. Declutter and clean the room so guests can move around easily and store their luggage.

2. Think ‘luxury hotel’ to promote a good night’s sleep. Make sure you bed is made up with fresh crisp cotton sheets, plump pillows and a light doona in case there is a chill in the air that night.

3. Place fluffy towels for your guests neatly folded on the end of the bed so they are accessible. Don’t forget to include a face washer, saves your towels from make up stains.

4. Ensure there is a bedside table or dresser where your guests can put their valuables. If you don’t have one, improvise with a stool or chair, a stack of books, or a sturdy box with a table cloth or fabric thrown over it.

5. Add a lamp beside the bed so your guests don’t have to stumble around in the dark trying to find the light switch. If there is no room on the bedside table use a floor lamp.

Other niceties include an alarm clock (just make sure it isn’t noisy so guests get a good night’s sleep), a couple of magazines or books you think your guest might like, a glass for water, and if you have the time a small basket of travel essentials such as an emery board, hand cream, comb and hair dryer.

7. A small bunch of fresh flowers or a simple bloom in small vase is a lovely addition and brightens up a room.

8. Dress your windows. Guests will appreciate a dark room to sleep in. There are lots of fabulous readymade blinds and block out curtains available nowadays. This is also a good time to check the windows are clean.

9. Check there is somewhere guests can hang their clothes. Clean out the wardrobe or ensure there are hooks on the back of the door. Provide a selection of coat hangers.

10. Ensure you have a mirror. It gives your guest the opportunity to check their make-up and bed hair.

11. If you have room, add a comfortable chair for your guest. This gives them a place to rest their legs, put their shoes on, or as often happens throw their clothes over.

12. Lastly, if your house is prone to mozzies don’t forget a mozzie coil or plug in deterrent. No-one likes to be a mozzies main course.
