Dr Michael van der Griend completed his post graduate specialist training at Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney and at Salisbury Hospital, United Kingdom.
Dr van der Griend is currently the Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at North Shore Private Hospital. His consulting rooms are located at North Shore Private Hospital and he operates and delivers at both North Shore Private Hospital and the Mater Hospital, Sydney.
With over 23 years of experience, Dr. van der Griend has cared for thousands of women and delivered over 5,000 babies, including twins, triplets and quadruplets. He offers a warm, caring and supportive environment and always takes the time to understand each patient’s needs and concerns. Passionate about education, Dr. van der Griend mentors and trains medical and midwifery students. He also lectures to community-based GPs to update them on current best practice antenatal testing.
Michael delivered both of my babies and I highly recommend him. As a first time mom-to-be at the time I constantly had a list of questions ready to throw during the session. Not once he made me feel like that I ask a single silly question. He’s very calm, reassuring , so kind and caring. Always focus on what the mother wants and knows what’s best. I’d like to thank Michael and again and Jane for giving the best support during the time!
I was a 40 yo first time IVF pregnancy and would not hesitate to recommend De Van Der Griend to all. We loved him and were so sad to say goodbye after our son was born. Michael is so detailed and reassuring. Every question or concern dealt with calmly and we always felt supported and safe. His staff (the Janes) were so wonderful too ?
Michael is the best….calming, compassionate and extremely skilled. Nothing is a problem for Michael or his receptionists (both Janes)….After having two babies under Michael’s care, there is no where else I’ll be going for my 3rd. I just cannot recommend Michael highly enough – the best.
Michael delivered our baby girl Sofia on 22nd April 2014. Throughout my pregnancy Michael was fabulous with loads of practical and pragmatic advice. No question was too silly, even if I asked it several times over. We felt very well informed about all aspects of my pregnancy and the options for the birth of our first child. Michael quickly understood what was important to us and intuitively how to address our questions and concerns. We always felt at ease and reassured by his advice. Michael and Jane were incredibly generous with their time and services, and went above and beyond for us. After the birth of Sofia, Michael visited us in hospital numerous times, even over the long weekend, while Jane with her caring nature ensured that we were well taken care of and had access to the best advice and care. Thank you Michael and Jane – we couldn’t recommend the practice more highly.
Michael delivered our baby in Sept 2013. He was fantastic through all the appointments and talked though options openly and with a balanced view. He was exceptional in the delivery suite (even in the wee small hours of the morning and even after I kicked him!) and follow up was excellent. Would recommend him to anyone.
Michael has delivered both our children and will deliver our future children. I can not speak highly enough of the friendliness, caring attitude and empathy that both him and Jane have shown to us throughout our pregnancies and deliveries. Always punctual and following through when necessary. Jane is a godsend and awesome with any question, or just a chat. No question or problem seems too big and even the silly questions that we all have with first pregnancies are dealt with seriousness. Not only that, he made my husband feel as though he was part of this, at every step and was able to not only communicate with me but also with my husband. What a great team and thank you for making our pregnancies a calm experience.
Where do I begin? Dr van der Griend (aka vdG) and Jane were extremely professional, patient and friendly through my pregnancy and aftercare. vdG knew exactly how to calm my anxieties of first time pregnancy and delivery. I couldn’t have been more blessed with how wonderful this team is. The caring nature, the contagious smiles and their laid back personalities made me feel welcome and at ease every step of the way.

Thank you Michael SO much for delivering our healthy baby girl, Jemima – the BEST present ever! Your kindness, warmth and care will never be forgotten. After some challenging times, nothing was ever a problem. Michael always alleviated the anxiety and Jane…..well Jane is just gorgeous and so reassuring! They make the perfect team! If blessed with a second bub, we won’t hesitate to ring Jane and book in to see Michael! Would most definitely recommend Michael to any expectant parents. He is a rare find.
I am so glad that we found Michael he safely delivered my daughter in November 2012. He is an amazing doctor, always very professional, calm, and accessible. Michael provided us informative information and options to make the best delivery decision. I also enjoyed being able to see my baby at each visit since Michael has an ultrasound machine in his office. If I have another baby I would got back to Michael in a heartbeat! Unfortunately we now live back in the USA; maybe we will have to move back if there is a baby #2 🙂
Michael, we cannot thank you enough for the amazing care and support you gave to us throughout the pregnancies and births of our three daughters.
From the first moment we stepped into your rooms we felt relaxed and relieved as we knew that we had to look no further for the right obstetrician. Your constant professionalism, knowledge, calmness, warmth and patience (with me and my many concerns) made every appointment stress-free and enjoyable. We appreciate you being so accessible and felt that we were in the best possible care at all times.
We’re going to miss seeing you and lovely Jane and will need to find an excuse to pop in and visit. We would highly recommend you to everyone!

I cannot thank Dr Van Der Griend enough for taking such good care of my baby & I during my pregnancy & for her safe delivery. It was always a pleasure seeing him & Jane & I look forward to seeing them again with baby number three.
Dr Michael van der Griend delivered our second born baby boy Billy on 14 December 2012 at NSPH (our first born was born in London in 2010) and we could not recommend him highly enough.
At all times during our consultations, Michael was relaxed and easy going, but at the same time very professional, provided us with guidance and presented us with options that allowed us to make informed choices. We moved interstate part way through the pregnancy but returned to Sydney for consultations and then for the birth and both Michael and his support staff were extremely accommodating in booking appointments etc. During the actual birth, Michael was calm, reassuring and made us feel at ease about the whole thing. Following the birth, Michael was accessible and approachable, making the entire experience wonderful and stress free.
We would certainly recommend Michael, and despite now living in Brisbane we will be returning to Michael for the birth of our third (boy?) when the time comes.
Michael delivered our beautiful baby boy in March 2013 and I can’t recommend his services enough. He is very caring and professional and even came in on his rostered day off on the day I delivered. Jane and the rest of his support staff are always friendly and caring as well. Thanks Michael!
