Being a small business owner one of the most exciting things you can do. Mum’s starting their own business is the fastest growing area as women decide this is the way for them to have a work life balance.
There are endless articles about Mum’s in business, so this will not be another one.
Many people begin in their small business with purely the desire to have a small business. There is often little thought beyond the start up phase. The start up phase is the most exciting, as there is a lot to do and a lot to think about. The hard work must begin after the start up.
So you have started a Business… now what?
‘If I build it they will come’ – no, this is simply not the case. The hard work begins now! You need to ask:
- Who wants what you have?
- Why do they want it?
- How does it benefit them?
- How am I going to tell them about it?
- What is the real value of what I have?
Most of these questions you need to answer yourself , but I am going to help you with ‘How am I going to tell them about it?’.
- Where does your ideal client go when they are online? Your business needs to be there too!
- What networking events do they attend? Your business needs to be there too!
- What other ways can your business show up in front of your ideal clients? Business Cards, Post Cards, T-Shirts, Magnets, Car signage, Shop Front, Conversation, Friends, Family etc.
Now I know you are thinking well I have an amazing website, and this is where I can be found!
No one knows you have a website until you tell them. Google is filled with websites and it is a popularity contest, the more popular the content, the higher the ranking. How are you going to be found if you are new? How are you going to increase your popularity?
This is where a blog can work tremendously well for a new website. As an authority on your topic you need to write about the questions people are asking. For example: If you are a children’s clothing business – you need to share the hints and tips that people want to know.
The title of your blog is important, as this is helpful to your blog showing up in Google search results for that topic. Example ‘How to spend less on your kids this summer’. You then have the high chance of appearing for searches like ‘how to spend less on your kids’.
For a business website, a weekly blog will help to grow your audience as you can promote it across your social media sites too. It gets people talking. You don’t have to be the most amazing writer in the world, write how you talk and talk about the topic that is your business.
While this blog doesn’t give you all the answers I sure hope that it gives you a reminder that the work truly begins after you have started.
