Tumbalong Lights is back with an inclusive playSPACE that celebrates the art of play and the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing. Installations and activations have been produced to the principles of ‘universal design’ so that people of all ages and abilities can enjoy a trip to outer space.

Located in the heart of Darling Harbour, Tumbalong Lights celebrates the art of play, the basic human right of inclusion and the joy of discovery in honour of the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing. Installations and activations have been produced using the principles of ‘universal design’ so that people of all ages and abilities can enjoy a trip to outer space. The design process for Tumbalong Lights involved extensive collaboration with artists who have a disability to create a world where everyone belongs.

3. Lights for the Wild – Vivid Sydney at Taronga Zoo

Lights for the Wild at Taronga Zoo Sydney is back in 2019! Your journey begins at Taronga’s heritage-listed main entrance — brought to life with a dazzling and moving animal projection show. Walk through the gates and explore the illuminated trail that winds through the stunning grounds of Taronga Zoo Sydney, showcasing awe-inspiring giant multimedia light sculptures: meet the magnificent Sumatran Tiger and her new gorgeous tiger cubs, the vividly coloured Marine Turtle, a swarm of tiny buzzing bees and our larger-than-life gorilla family – plus a whole cast of other captivating creatures that will sparkle in the night. Take time out and alight into the Taronga Centenary Theatre to see a multi-award winning animated short film favourite, reimagined as an amazing 270-degree cinema experience.

This year each of the incredible installations and light sculptures tell a fascinating story about our wildlife conservation.

4. Vivid Sydney at Barangaroo

Barangaroo’s Exchange Place is transformed into a wondrous Winter Camp for Vivid Sydney, inspired by the changing seasons.

Meet the glowing giant Marri Dyin (pronounced Mahr-ee Djin), meaning ‘Great Woman’ in Sydney Aboriginal language. One of the largest puppets constructed in Australia, this six-metre tall contemporary spirit reveals the influence and importance of First Nations women, including Barangaroo after whom the site is named.

From Monday to Wednesday, Marri Dyin sits in still contemplation by the campfire. During Thursday to Sunday evening performances, she invites audiences to join in the practice of hunting and gathering before kneeling down so children can share a magical moment with her.

  • When: From Friday 24 of May until Saturday 15 June
  • Where: Barangaroo Exchange Place and Wulugul Walk, Barangaroo
  • Cost: Free

5. Vivid Sydney at The Rocks

Vivid Sydney is where art, technology and commerce intersect. Three weeks of game changing ideas and seminars, amazing music and light sculptures that transform the city. We love Circular Quay for a family-friendly evening with three top stops:

  • Celestial Pancake: Celestial Pancake is a suspended audio-visual installation that visitors can walk under. Underneath the ‘pancake’, audiences are entranced by sweeping waves of light, dancing wisps and exploding stars that form a fantastical narrative. Woven into the installation are ethereal and dramatic compositions triggered by and generated in real time alongside the lights.
  • Goo! This installation invites kids and kids-at-heart to play in a virtual fountain of multi-coloured, sticky slime. Join up to three others in the performance area where a series of live, high resolution scans are recorded and implemented by a unique piece of crafted software, allowing visitors to drive the real time media with their movements. In other words, jump in. You direct the fun.
  • Ocean Sentinels: Each of the figures is lit with moving light reflections, echoing waves along island beaches. As the waves rise, they will eventually consume these communities, rendering them climate refugees. When communities flee their island homes, they risk losing their identity, culture, language, traditions and connectedness. One day, The Ocean Sentinels may be all that is left to remind us of these cultures lost to human-induced climate change.
