The new Irish Town Grove Playground at Turramurra is open for business! Tucked away behind Princes Street shops you’ll find the welcome renovation of the old playground. Wendy Brockbank went along to test out the swings!
Our local is the new Irish Town Grove Playground at Turramurra, and we watched the new upgrade take shape during its construction. The old playground, to be very honest, was quite underwhelming so you can understand why the new playground conjured up much excitement for my boys. They couldn’t wait to test it out!
Once we walked through the gates my oldest made a beeline directly to the climbing tower! Naturally, his little brother followed, and so did I, pleased to see the playground now offers a good range of equipment for toddler, pre-school and school-aged kids.
Irish Town Grove Playground: Climbing Structure
- Climbing tower with slide
- Banister climbing bars
- Timer dials
The climbing tower offers plenty of fun, and there is the ever-popular slide attached. The climbing net is great for co-ordination and can be climbed from both sides, which is great for competitive siblings!
For the risk takers who want to test their strength, there is the sloping bars, where you can hold on tightly and monkey bar your way up to the tower platform. Or another option is to jump down from the platform onto the soft padding below (mum was holding her breath!)
Musical and Movement Play
- Musical Instruments
- Spinning orbit
- Swings and Combination swing: Bucket seat, regular seat and birds nest seat
The new musical equipment at Irish Grove Playground lets kids keep the beat! Does your little one like making music on their own, or want to have a music battle with their friends? Well they can do both on this double sided xylophone!
The clever swing combo makes it inclusive for all ages. I could have my older son on the regular seat, while my younger guy was in the bucket seat. When they had enough of swinging on their own, both jumped onto the birds nest seat together.
No matter which playground we visit, the spinning orbit is a favourite with kids of all ages. It’s such a wonderful piece of equipment because it is so inclusive. Here the little ones sit down, while the big ones burn energy running as they spin the orbit around. ‘More, more, more!’ shouted out amongst the giggles and laughter. It’s just as funny watching the kids stumble off in their dizzy state. Definitely a big thumbs up!
Imaginative and Free Play
- Pirate Ship
- Steppers, balance beams & boulders
A wonderful addition to the park, the inclusion of the pirate ship is fantastic for creative play and for little imaginations to go wild. My boys enjoyed their adventure playing at being pirates out at sea.
The steppers and wooden beams are a great way to practice balancing, and awesome for little imaginations pretending they are on an epic adventure. “Don’t fall off! Watch out for the crocodiles and sharks!”
If your little one is a bit of a climber, then the sandstone boulders will make them feel like they are on top of the world!
Bike and Scooter Track
A bike track has been installed as part of the playground upgrade. It’s a loop so it’s ideal for scooters and for the kids, especially those that are learning to ride their bikes.
There is plenty of shade covering the playground with 4 bench seats located around the enclosed area, which is great for parents to relax in comfort while watching kids play. The playground offers one sheltered picnic table.
The playground upgrade was done with consultation from the local community, with the aim of providing an attractive, engaging space to meet and play, while enhancing the local neighbourhood. I think that this has definitely been achieved and can happily report that the Irish Town Grove playground is our hidden little gem!
