Sydney Fish Market
Sydney Fish Market is an authentic, working fish market located on the harbour in Blackwattle Bay, Pyrmont

Sydney Fish Market is a great stop for kids after you feel like you’ve explored everything at Darling Harbour! Here’s what’s on offer at the markets right now.

Darling Harbour is a great attraction for kids of all ages, but there’s another treasure just around the corner- Sydney Fish Markets! After a trip to Tumbalong Park, head across to the harbourside seafood markets and stop for a buffet or yum cha lunch or just grab some freshly shucked oysters and hot chips for lunch by the water, watching prawn trawlers carry their catch in to shore.

Outside, the sprawling site is a vibrant mix of bustling restaurants with water views, casual bench seating along the waterfront where working fishing vessels cross the water before you, and fresh fish stalls offering catches of crab, mussels, prawns and fish of all shapes and sizes.

Waterside fish and chips

We stocked up on lychees, raspberries and baby grapes to go with our seafood feast, plus buns to make fresh prawn rolls

We started the day parking in the ample parking area. Outside, we wandered past giant pelicans and dodged seagulls to enter (registering our attendance on the COVID QR scanner). On the way in we stopped at Waterside Fruit Connection and grabbed fresh, weird and wonderful fruit including currant grapes, passionfruit (the size of an adult fist!) and lychees.

Once inside we grabbed fresh bread rolls from Gregory’s Bread, a bottle of red for dinnertime, and then we hit the stalls. We visited Peter’s Sydney Fish Market, Nicholas Seafood Trader and Musumeci Seafoods and stocked up on sashimi grade salmon (sliced on the spot), stacks of fresh prawns, a dozen oysters, Tasmanian scallops and snapper fillets.

Fish in tank at markets

Many of the fish stands have tanks brimming with fish and other sea creatures

Fresh fish stalls offer catches of crab, mussels, prawns and fish of all  varieties!

The selection was mindboggling, including live pippis, live mud crab, black-lipped abalone, largehead hairtail and bailer shells.

We finished by grabbing some hot chips, fresh grilled fish and calamari and headed out the the benches to share a seaside lunch, followed by a a scoop each of creamy gelato. Bliss!

Sydney Harbour view

The bench seats have a great view of the working harbour and its many boats

We had a great time spotting yachts, tugboats and trawlers crossing the water

And of course some cold gelato in a cone to finish off a perfect day out in Sydney
