African Safari Experience

Get ready for a family holiday like no other, right here in NSW! Construction has begun on the Serengeti Resort at Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo, and it’s set to bring the magic of Africa to our very own backyard. Think giraffes grazing at sunrise, zebras strolling past your balcony, and rhinos resting under the afternoon sun… all just a short drive or flight away.

The Serengeti Resort is the largest project in the Zoo’s history, transforming 55 hectares of open grasslands into a one-of-a-kind wildlife escape. This area will be five times bigger than the Zoo’s current African Savannah habitat and will be home to roaming herds of giraffes, rhinos, zebras, antelopes, and more.

With its scale, ambition, and family-focused design, the Serengeti Resort is tipped to become Australia’s number one family holiday destination — and from what we’ve seen so far, we believe it!

Taronga Chief Executive, Cam Kerr, says:

“The Serengeti Resort will be a game changer for Taronga Western Plains Zoo and for tourism in regional NSW. Designed with families in mind, it brings the beauty and excitement of an African safari to our own backyard, right here in Dubbo. This is more than just a place to stay; it’s an unforgettable experience that blends Taronga’s world-class wildlife expertise with the warmth of regional hospitality. It will firmly cement Dubbo as a must-do holiday destination for every Australian family.”

And when you’re ready to cool off, you’ll find a resort-style infinity lagoon pool nearby, which is the ultimate spot to unwind after a day of animal encounters.

The heart of the Serengeti Resort will be its state-of-the-art Events Centre, seating up to 300 guests and boasting panoramic views of the plains. It’s set to be a show-stopping venue for everything from weddings and milestone birthdays to family reunions and school or community events.

Paired with a 170-seat café-restaurant and flexible indoor-outdoor spaces, this hub will be a place where families and friends gather, celebrate, and make unforgettable memories.

Minister for Regional NSW, Tara Moriarty, adds:

“It’s fantastic to see construction well underway, with building works started and milestones already achieved at Taronga Western Plains Zoo. This exciting and deliverable project is a great example of NSW Government investment that will deliver a major boost to the Dubbo region.

Dubbo Zoo is already a wonderful place and once completed, the Serengeti Resort will mean even more visitors can stay and enjoy this iconic attraction for longer.”

When can you go?

Construction started in July 2025 and is expected to take 12 months, with the official opening planned for the second half of 2026.

So, start dreaming now — your next great family adventure could be waking up to the sights and sounds of Africa, without ever leaving NSW.
