A new, sophisticated salon! Polished Nail Bar, Wahroonga

If you’re looking for a nail bar that provides exceptional customer service in a sophisticated and stylish salon, then it’s time to try the brand new Polished Nail Bar in Wahroonga. North Shore Mums Founder, Rachel, went along for a manicure and pedicure, and shares her experience.

I’m a little embarrassed to admit, but it’s been a while since my last manicure or pedicure. We’re talking pre-Covid 2020, so approaching almost two years.

Before the pandemic, I occasionally treated myself to a pedicure at a random shopping centre nail bar. Although it was nice to get some shiny new nails, the experience often felt rushed and that I was just a number in a long line of customers that needed to be processed. I got the end result, but not so much a warm and fuzzy feeling of truly being looked after.

Well, that’s all changed now. I was invited to the brand new Polished Nail Bar in Wahroonga by owner (and local mum) Jacqueline, for a manicure and pedicure… and one look at my hands and feet immediately reminded me just how much I needed to give these parts of my body a little attention. So, I leapt at the opportunity!

Polished Nail Bar opened in Wahroonga in June 2021 and was only trading for three weeks before the second outbreak of Covid-19 shut them down for 15 weeks. They have only reopened again on 11 October 2021. To say I was happy to support this local business is an understatement!

The exceptional experience at Polished Nail Bar

Upon arrival at Polished Nail Bar, I was warmly greeted by Jacqueline and shown to my luxurious cream armchair. A heated wheat pack was placed across my shoulders and I immediately felt relaxed. The attention and care was immediate. How delightful.

I was presented with a selection of OPI colours to select my finger and toenail colours, and asked what I’d like to drink. I requested a coffee, and was thrilled that this coffee would be coming from the cafe across the road, Redleaf Piccolo! Tick, tick, tick.

As I relaxed into my seat, I started to soak up the luxurious surroundings. A stunning feature wall with blush pink herringbone tiles with sparkly gold signage. A deep blue wall. Cream furniture with gold accents. Nail polishes displayed in recessed shelves. All very luxurious, stylish and Insta-worthy!

The manicure and pedicure treatments

Polished Nail Bar offers a variety of different manicures and pedicures, all outlined on their website. Here’s what I chose:

Gel Pedicure ($55)

Ooooh, I love a pedicure, and the pedicure at Polished Nail Bar was ‘next level’. My feet were soaked, scrubbed, polished and moisturised, and my toes were preened and polished to perfection. Meanwhile, I relaxed with the heated wheat pack and a cappuccino from Redleaf Piccolo. It was heaven!

I’m delighted with my vibrant pink OPI Gelcolor… it’s fun and summery. The best thing about gel polishes is that they’re long-lasting and don’t chip or smudge.

Dip Powder Manicure ($60)

I’m a 40-something woman and my hands are an embarrassment. I’ve been a nail biter my entire life, and it isn’t a habit I’ve ever been able to conquer. I’ve tried the horrible tasting potions, willpower and even a session of hypnotherapy…and although it’s worked temporarily, I’ve just always subconsciously started biting my nails again. I don’t like the look of my hands, but it’s something I’ve just come to accept.

I was absolutely thrilled when I heard about the Dip Powder Manicure, which helps to give you natural-looking nails in less than an hour!

The experience at Polished Nail Bar in Wahroonga was exceptional. There’s nothing worse than leaving a salon with a slightly botched nail, so I was delighted that my Nail Technician was extremely careful and focused the entire time. She took time and care to ensure that every single nail was done to her high standards.

I was absolutely thrilled with the end results! My nails hand transformed from short stubbly nails, to perfectly manicured & shaped nails.

Note: I opted for the OPI Bubble Bath nail polish and a ‘sqauoval’ finish (square with rounded edges).

If you book the Dip Powder Manicure and Gel Pedicure as a package, it’s $95 for both!

Kids are welcome!

I’m lucky that all my children are now at school, so my weekdays are child-free! But for the last 10 years, I’ve had an under 5-year-old with me, so I know how hard it can be to juggle a bit of self-care with kids underfoot.

It was so lovely to see just how child-friendly Polished Nail Bar is with kids. One of the clients was a mum with her three-year-old son, and he was doted upon by the staff and given activities to keep him entertained.

“We love having kids at the salon. Most little girls come in and get the option to pick colours of our Disney princess nail varnish collection (and glitter). Often the kids pick 10 colours and our wonderful Nail Technicians paint each finger & toe a different colour. We also give the kids a babycino, hot chocolate or milkshake. They are treated with a lot of care and by the end of their experience, the girls are all smiles and chattery. If a mum comes in with their son, we provide a drink for them too and also a colouring book with pencils for entertainment. The staff also try to engage with the child so the mum gets a few minutes break. We had mothers come with newborns, so we are open to breastfeeding and get the mum to sit in the pedicure armchairs, we fill out a basin of warm water and they can deep their feet in whilst feeding (even if they haven’t requested a pedicure). If a baby is sleeping we lower the music if needed. We place the capsule or pram wherever the mother is most comfortable. We also ensure strong smelling products are used on the opposite end of the salon to the baby.” – Jacqueline Edwards, Polished Nail Bar

Clean and sanitised! Keeping you Covid-safe

In these pandemic times, we need to talk about what businesses are doing to keep themselves and their clients Covid-safe. The attention to detail at Polished Nail Bar was evident!

  • First and foremost, the level of hygiene and cleaning is evident. Between every client, everything is completely cleaned and sanitised. Jacqui was very thorough in her cleaning of the pedicure basins.
  • All staff wear masks and all clients are currently required to wear masks too.
  • At the manicure stations, there’s a clear perspex shield between the nail technician and the client, to further protect.

What inspired you to open a nail salon in Wahroonga?
In a previous life, I was an event manager and during Covid 2020, my work dried up. I was faced with a career decision…wait for Covid to end and continue doing events, or find something new. At the same time, my eldest son was starting Kindy 2021, and in late 2020 his school asked for the kids to join for an orientation on campus. I went to the Wahroonga Village to get my nails done while I waited for him, and was shocked that there wasn’t a Nail Salon! This gave me an idea. I got a loan, found a space to lease, found a shop-fitter…and here we are!

You were forced to close just a few weeks after opening. What has the impact been for you?
We had to close. At the time it was very disappointing as we were starting to build a customer base and I was really keen to get the word out there before the festive season. It meant we lost 100% revenue for the full duration of the lockdown. I try to see the silver lining though. I consider the first three weeks as a soft opening, and I was able to stop and reflect on our business practices during lockdown. Also, none of our products is perishable so thank goodness we didn’t lose much from our stock levels. To catch up for the lost time we are trying hard to get the word out there.

Give us a quick overview of your family and how you balance this with being a business owner?
I have 3 kids (Oliver 6, Imogen 4 and Elliott 1). I also have a very supportive husband who works doubly hard and chips in. I have the kids in great care and school, which I’m really thankful for. I also have an amazing mother-in-law and mother who support us daily! I’ll be honest…it’s hard. At the moment I’ve got major mum guilt, but I hope we’ll all find our rhythm soon. The biggest key to my success is being surrounded by such an amazing family, who celebrate the highs and understand the lows!
