Have you thought about Luna Park as a way to experience Vivid 2016? The iconic amusement park offers amazing views across the water, a gorgeous child-friendly restaurant, handy ferry access and easy parking – not to mention a lovely waterside walk that takes you right under the Harbour Bridge to a viewing spot opposite the Opera House. Oh, and let’s not forget riding the Ferris Wheel into the night sky with the lights of Vivid spread out below! Melissa Dibben took in the experience.
As a family, this was a night of firsts for us; the first time at Luna Park together and first time at Vivid. And it was fantastic. I hadn’t been to Luna Park since I was a child and it was nice to revisit those memories, and the kids had seen that iconic Luna Park entrance smile so often that they were desperate to go themselves.
We parked on site, in the car park under Luna Park itself, where the fee is a $9 flat rate, and I have to say this was a serious plus when you have children. Even though they’re not too young (6 and 5) having the car close by was a blessing by the time we were ready to go home.
Dinner was a real treat. The Deck brasserie has an absolutely amazing view of the Harbour Bridge, Opera House and all the boats and ferries along the Harbour. They have a special Vivid dinner package; 2 courses for $55 or 3 courses for $69. Kids meals are $22. The menu is Mediterranean cuisine, and I had natural oysters followed by pan-fried barramundi and my husband had beef short rib and The Deck Snickers chocolate mousse dessert – which I may have tasted (just a smidge!) to check if it was as amazing as he was saying. Both the kids had grilled chicken breast with salad and fries. The meal were very generous and also included ice cream and a drink in a funky cup which they got to take home. Also on the menu are entrees including Moroccan spiced lamb & Medjool date pie or spanner crab pasta, and for mains you can choose between roast pork belly, Coq au vin, a creamy parmesan gnocchi or seafood Paella. Besides the Snickers chocolate mousse my husband had, there was also a pistachio brulee. On the night we visited, our wait staff, Julianna and Peter were great and very accommodating with the kids. The service was excellent. The restaurant was a popular spot, so it pays to book ahead.
As a Vivid special, included in the meal were tickets for the Ferris Wheel and either hot chocolate or mulled wine. We all had the hot chocolate and it was the perfect weather for it. The view from the top of the Ferris Wheel is amazing and the city lights never disappoint. But during the Vivid festival, it’s even more breathtaking.
After riding the Ferris Wheel we walked along the Harbour to stand right underneath the bridge and watch the lights change. It really is amazing to see. Coupled with the beautiful display on the Opera House sails, the kids stood transfixed.
The Milson’s Point ferry stop is literally right next to Luna Park and it’s just a six-minute ferry ride across the Harbour to Circular Quay and more fantastic light shows. After 2 1/2 hours, we really appreciated the closeness of the ferry to the car park and the ease of exit.
Luna Park and The Deck are a fantastic way to start your Vivid experience – and best of all, it was a completely stress-free experience.
