Want your kids to get in touch with nature? The Toddler and Tadpoles sessions offer a chance for children to learn about animals by getting up close and personal with different critters- including live snakes! North Shore mum Riley took her two boys (aged 3 and 5) to a session, and couldn’t wait to share all the fun they had!
Wednesdays are our fun days in 2016, and we are trying to make the most of our big boy’s last year at home before he starts school next year. For something a bit different, I decided to take my boys to the Toddlers & Tadpoles session, which is held at the St Ives Wildflower Gardens which run every Wednesday from 10am – 11.30am during term time.
The Toddler and Tadpoles sessions are hosted by experienced rangers. Each week they explore a different bush theme and incorporate storytelling, craft, creature encounters, stroller-friendly bush walks and gardening activities.
The session began with tables with craft (my boy particularly enjoyed the water colour pencils) which were used for each child to create a scale (to be used to make a big fish at end of craft).
After craft, the group gathered for some song singing (relating to animals) and then a ranger came out holding a box that contained a centralian python (named Fluffy!). She offered all the children a pat, most were very willing (whilst I squirmed in my seat!).
Following the snake presentation we took a easy pram-friendly stroll down to the gardens to look out for tadpoles, frogs and dragonflies. On the boardwalk one of the Rangers then read a book relating to fish and their scales. Then we walked back up to the tables where the kids could create their own clay snakes (lots of fun!).
This was a very organised and enjoyable morning with the kids and we look forward to trying again someday soon.
