If you’re keen to sink your teeth into some delicious meals, you can’t go past the Italian-influenced menu at The Sawmill in Pymble. Our expert food reviewer, Foodie Mookie, sampled treats from lamb salad to linguine, finished off with mini vanilla cannoli. The verdict? Magnifico!
More often than not, when there is a decision to be made about food, the Foodie Mookie household has Italian on the list. This was my second visit to The Sawmill – once with friends and once with my imaginary friends (a rare hour of solitude). It’s a delicious Italian restaurant nestled in colonial history with a reputation for wood-fired pizza, moreish pasta and a warm and family-friendly atmosphere. Tucked away in West Pymble’s leafy Duneba Street, The Sawmill is fast becoming a must-eat destination.
The Café & Restaurant opened in February this year and pays homage to the sawmilling history of West Pymble through the use of reclaimed wood and iron which creates a colonial-Italiano feel to the interior. The extensive renovation is complete with a custom built, wood-fire oven that makes you salivate in anticipation.
The exposed wooden beams, polish concrete and huge windows create a light and bright atmosphere in which to tuck in to ‘Classic Beef Lasagne’ ($24), ‘Winter Salad with grilled chicken (Gluten Free)’ ($22) and their ‘Signature Sawmill Burger’ ($20) for lunch. The chatter in the restaurant is a good sign and the wait staff are happy to oblige with a friendly chat and quick service.
On my lunch time visit, I had the chance to try the ‘Lamb Salad‘ (Lamb, pumpkin, quinoa, goats cheese, spinach, walnuts) ($22). If you love lamb (I certainly do), you will love the succulent meat combined with a creamy goats cheese and crunchy walnuts. On my second visit, I had the chance to try a new dish that was a special – ‘Linguine Marinara with prawns, scallops and clams‘. The pasta was al dente, and the seafood and marinara sauce lunchtime-perfection.
Apart from the wood-fire pizzas at night, the other draw card of The Sawmill is the huge selection of sweet slices, cakes and cannoli. The glassed in showcase at the entrance baits you to take a bite. Thankfully I possess a purpose-built extra dessert stomach so I can partake in some sweetness. How does this sound? ‘Mini Cannoli with vanilla ricotta‘, ‘Mars Bar cheesecake‘ and ‘Lemon Meringue Pie‘ all served with a dusting of cocoa and a fresh strawberry. That’s not all! You can also partake in ‘Toblerone Delight‘, ‘Tiramisu‘ and ‘Chocolate Budino‘.
You are probably thinking how do I keep my model-physique when eating such deliciousness? The answer is North Shore Mums. My NSM friends had the oh so difficult task of helping me eat my way through desserts. Such sacrifices.
The Sawmill Cafe and Bar is one of those friendly neighbourhood gems that you are glad you found and appreciate you have on the North Shore. With an inviting feel, excellent menus, you will find reasons to return time and time again. Whether it be for the fresh-out-of-the wood-fire-oven pizza, a tasty and aromatic pasta, a beautiful lunchtime salad or for a sneaky coffee (complete with sweet snack – I won’t tell anyone).
