Whether you’re looking for something to do on a rainy day, or searching for some peace and quiet as well as a coffee, you’ll want to know about the new HomeHQ ‘book swap’ Library, writes NSM Kristy Komadina, who visited the centre’s latest attraction recently.

HomeHQ Artarmon is located on Frederick Street (next to Bunnings) and is home to a variety of homewares and furniture shops. Unlike many other popular shopping centres, it’s fairly serene inside and it always has plenty of undercover parking – perfect for that rainy day when you can’t play outside with your kids but you don’t fancy dealing with crowds either.

HomeHQ has just launched its new library concept. It’s located next to the HomeHQ Cafe on the ground level. There are some gorgeous relaxed leather couches to snuggle on and plenty of tables at which to enjoy lunch or sip your coffee. The idea is that members of the community will bring in their preloved books and, in return, they can pick up a selection of books from the shelves to take home.

At the moment there are two bookshelves, but the people at HomeHQ tell me that there are at least two more shelves coming and that they hope to have them filled to the brim with books in the coming weeks and months. If you have any old books that are in good condition you’d like to donate, just pop on by.

On Tuesday 16 June at 10.30am, the HomeHQ Library will be running its first Children’s Story Time Session – free for parents and children to come along to. It will run for 45 minutes, and I can’t think of a better opportunity for some quiet coffee time while the kids are enthralled. It could even make a great option for a mother’s group gathering. I’m told there will be many more storytelling sessions to come, and the space also has a large plasma screen TV where movies will be shown.

While this area will never replace a traditional library, I like the casual nature of swapping books and the ability to have a meal or a coffee while you read, and I’m certain the storytelling sessions are going to be well attended (don’t forget to mark 16 June in your diary!).

The HomeHQ Library is open from 9am to 5.30pm. For more information, visit HomeHQ Artarmon.
