Foxton Park Farmstay in the Southern Highlands is a beautiful property, which offers a true escape from the daily grind, writes NSM Kate Duncan. And although the farmstay was a truly relaxing time for us parents, it offered our kids plenty of excitement and activities with a taste of the country life.

The Southern Highlands is reminiscent of the English countryside with narrow lanes, picturesque villages, trimmed hedgerows and quaint cottages. We even had the English weather to match, but it suited the place perfectly and made the holiday even more memorable as we explored in our gumboots and raincoats. Or should I say ‘wellies’ and ‘macs’?

Welcome to the Highlands…

Location

Foxton Park Farmstay is an 80-acre property located approximately 90 minutes drive south of Sydney’s North Shore, located in the Southern Highlands of NSW at Wildes Meadow. The property is 20 minutes drive south-east of Bowral, and is only 45 minutes drive from Wollongong and 25 minutes from the township of Kangaroo Valley.

Accommodation

Binnowee Cottage (3 bedroom, sleeps 10)

Binnowee Cottage (three bedrooms; sleeps 10)

The property has two accommodation options. The first is Binnowee Cottage, a fully self-contained three-bedroom cottage that can sleep up to 10 people. The cottage has one bathroom with a shower, a freestanding bath and heated floors, plus a second toilet that is located off the laundry. It also has two lounge areas, both with wood fire furnaces (all matches, firelighters and wood are provided), and large flat-screen televisions.

The dining room boasts a huge 10-seater hardwood dining table, plus there is an outdoor barbecue area and dining setting on the deck. There is also a small table with four chairs in the kitchen, which is an easy spot for feeding little ones.

The cottage is very child-friendly. It is single level (no stairs!) and has a high chair, portacot, plastic bowls and cups, as well as toys, games and books.

The other accommodation option is the separate Studio which can sleep up to four people, which would suit 1-3 adults or a couple with two children. It has an ensuite and a kitchenette as well as a gas barbecue and picnic area in the garden outside.

At Foxton Park Farmstay all bedding, linen and towels are provided, but all food needs to be brought with you as do coffee pods for the Nespresso machine.

Things to do on the farm

  • Tennis on the championship-size tennis court
  • Stroll through the orchard
  • Feed the horses, ducks and chickens
  • Bushwalking
  • Pat baby lambs (if you are there at the right time of year!)
  • Check out the sheep and alpacas
  • Collect the eggs from the henhouse

Things to do in the area

Binnowee Cottage is ideally located close to many of the Southern Highlands’s most popular attractions. We highly recommend exploring nearby Belmore Falls, Fitzroy Falls and Carrington Falls, which feature lovely walks and lookouts over the waterfalls, gorges and valleys. Not all have pram-friendly access, so do your research before setting off.

Robertson township is only a 10-minute drive away – it’s the home of the Big Potato and a great cheese factory, shops and cafes. And, of course, the famous Robertson Pie Shop (yum!)

Walking the Illawarra Fly

On the Treetops Walk

We did the Illawarra Fly Treetop Adventures Treetop Walkwhich, although expensive at around $25 per person, is worth it for the fantastic views from the edge of the Illawarra Escarpment to the ocean at Wollongong. It caters for prams, too!

Find time to visit the historic town of Burrawang with its general store/cafe, historic pub and great butcher shop. The pub is great for families as it has a beautiful garden out the back as well as a covered outdoor eating area so the kids can explore the gardens while the parents relax with their meals.

Head down to the village of Kangaroo Valley where there are many cafes and other activities to partake in, such as kayak hire, and I’m also told there is a great lolly shop (As we travelled at Easter we gave this one a wide berth so as not to be enticed in by the kids for more sugar!).

If your family are cricket fans a visit to Bowral is a must. Once the home of the legendary Don Bradman, there is the Bradman Museum & International Cricket Hall of Fame to take in. Bowral is also brimming with boutiques, antique stores, cafes and restraunts, and hosts weekend markets so is well worth a visit.

Nearby dining options

  • Burrawang Village Hotel, Burrawang
  • Biota Dining (two Chef’s Hats), Bowral
  • Briars Country Lodge & Inn, Burradoo

Nearby grocery options

I cannot recommend Foxton Park Farmstay highly enough to families of any age and stage – with so much to do both in the area and on the property itself, the whole family will have a wonderful stay. We will definitely be returning!
