Playgrounds don’t come much more hi-tech and interactive than colourful Caterpillar Lane. Just opened at Harbourside Shopping Centre at Darling Harbour, the centrepiece is an enormous cartoon caterpillar, over 40 metres long!
If you’re looking for tried-and-true swings and slides, Caterpillar Lane isn’t your average playground! The futuristic setup comes complete with interactive digital panels, climbing towers, slides, light projection games, as well as a special soft play area for children four years and under.
Located on Level 2 of Harbourside Shopping Centre, the unique play area is for little ones between the ages of 1-8, and has been separated into three sections.
The Caterpillar Head (ages 4-8)
Section one is the friendly giant caterpillar head, overlooking Level 1. The head of the caterpillar is for children between 4-8 years old and takes the form of a soft play structure across multiple levels filled with gross motor play events, including integrative gadget panels of Cat & Mouse and Walk Around Zoo; a spider bungee; jumbo slide; triangle deck climb; along with lots of space for little legs to run amuck.
The Caterpillar Body (ages 1-8)
Section two is the body of caterpillar, a curving, colourful arch focusing on interactive games projected onto the floor. Four interactive touch screens are placed around the base of the caterpillar providing endless hours of fun for children between 1-8 years old.
The Caterpillar Tail (ages 1-4)
Section three tail of the caterpillar is for ages 1-4 years, complete with six interactive gadget panels, including classics Tic, Tac, Toe, Cat & Mouse and Mix & Match; a safari play car; a butterfly play slide; triangle deck; spider bungee; and more.
All sections of the caterpillar are separated by comfortable ottoman furniture for parents to relax and watch on as their kids learn, play and laugh. The play area also comes with anti-slip safety flooring, shoe self-storage and soft foam climbing equipment.
Harbourside Centre Manager, Alexa Arnott, commented, “We’re excited to announce the opening of Caterpillar Lane because it is so far beyond a traditional retail playground. The caterpillar encompasses active learning equipment and digital integration to provide kids with essential gross motor skills and mental stimulation, while parents watch on from the lounges”.
