Have you heard about 'The Secret Gardens' in Killara?

Swain Gardens, Killara

Who would have ever thought, having lived on the North Shore their entire life, one could stumble across such a wonderful find! In the middle of Killara, on an ordinary suburban street, lies what my kids have dubbed ‘The Secret Gardens’ aka Swain Gardens!

One of the great perks of running a photography business is searching for new locations or going on a reconnaissance when a client requests a new location – Swain Gardens was just one of these requests and what a pleasant surprise it was. The moment you walk down the driveway you are taken into what my daughter described as ‘a magical world’!

The bushland setting of Swain Gardens is set over three hectares. It’s a place where you can walk around and explore, or just sit back on one of the many seats and relax and admire the exotic gardens. My kids loved to wander up and down the different levels and terraces of the gardens exploring where each pathway led. Some of the exciting finds were the gigantic bamboo plants, jumping along the moss covered stepping stones, running across the bridges over the little creek and walking along the fallen trees!

Swain Gardens KillaraFacilities such as gas BBQs, meeting room and toilets also allow the gardens to be used for picnics, social functions and weddings!

These gardens really are a hidden gem. Every time we have visited this lovely little hideaway, we may have only passed one other person. It’s so quiet and peaceful.

These magnificent gardens were bequeathed by Mr Arthur (Mick) Newling Swain to the National Trust in 1973 as he wished his beloved gardens to benefit the community, the property was then given to Ku-ring-gai Council in 1982 and are managed as community land by the Council and supported by the Friends of Swain Gardens, a group of dedicated volunteers.

I think it’s time for you to go and explore the secrets within these gardens but shhh… let’s just keep the secret amongst North Shore Mums!
