Located on Sydney’s North Shore, Barker College is an Anglican day and boarding school. In 2016, the School announced plans to become fully coeducational by 2022. Girls will now be accepted into Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten from 2018, from Year 3 in 2019 and in Year 7 in 2020.
Barker’s broadly based curriculum is designed to offer significant choice of subjects and courses to meet a wide range of individual student interests and abilities. The School’s dedicated teachers nourish the soul of each and every one of our students and help them to find knowledge from information and wisdom from knowledge.
When children are learning to read during the first three years of school, they need a great deal of assistance from teachers and parents to learn phonics, as it is a major contributor to success in mastering the mechanics of reading. In Pre-K to Year 2 in 2017, Barker have embarked on a new phonics program using a multi-sensory approach that includes actions, singing, dancing and puppets. It is child-centred and fun, as our youngest readers learn the 42 sounds that make up our alphabetic code.
In addition to the classroom experience, a broad co-curricular program provides many opportunities for the students to participate in a diverse range of activities and sports. From Debating, to Chess, to Robotics, Cadets, Music and Drama – there is something for every student.
Barker College is focused on the future. We want all our students to come together to make the world a fairer place and this commitment to justice and equity begins at school. Our students are at the heart of our work.
At Barker we aim to provide a framework for young people to experience the best that the future offers – more than that, to become people who shape this future rather than merely people who consume it.
