I am a mum of three kids and live on Sydney’s North Shore. After having my children I realised how much I would have appreciated a consistent and supportive professional to teach, guide and listen to me while I was pregnant and during those first few months after having my babies. Once I researched what was out in the community, I realised that this was the role of a doula. Having studied and worked as a social worker, then in the corporate health system I decided to have a complete career change and retrain as a doula. People often ask… what is a doula?
I can be a normal part of any birthing team, offering a non-medical support to the pregnant woman and partner. A doula will support any birth option that is right for parents, whether that be a drug free birth or caesarean, through to breast versus bottle feeding. It is not the role of doula to judge or give personal opinions, rather support and offer education and unbiased knowledge on all different sorts of birthing and parenting options. I help write birth plans, assist in navigating the medical system and educate on possible pain relief, options and birthing techniques.
Partners and fathers often need support throughout pregnancy and birth. I offer information and education on pregnancy and the birth experience.
No client wants the same thing from their doula, I am flexible in what I can offer and I encourage you to feel confident in your decisions and abilities!
