Australia Day events are usually the first big celebration (and public holiday) for 2020. The holiday on Sunday 26 January gives us a nice long weekend, with lots of ways to get involved in celebrations, or if you prefer, you can attend community events around supporting Indigenous peoples. Here are some events happening on the North Shore, the city and nearby suburbs, so take your pick and have a memorable day with the family!

Bradfield Park is one of the most spectacular vantage points for the Sydney Harbour festivities

Bradfield Park will host a traditional Aussie BBQ with an exciting multicultural twist! Come and celebrate the day with spectacular harbour views, free kids activities, a wide range of delicious food stalls and free music from top bands including: Bermuda Social, Cavan Te & THe Fuss, Evergreen Music and Jellybean Jam. Entertainment and Activities inlcude a circus playground, jumping castle, face painting, Australian Wildlife Display, clay animal making plus lots more!

Bradfield Park is one of the most spectacular vantage points for the Sydney Harbour Australia Day festivities and a wonderful place to watch the Harbour Parade, Ferrython, Salute to Australia, Tug & Yacht Ballet, Tall Ships Race, and, of course, the 184th Australia Day Regatta.

Bicentennial Park, West Pymble

Celebrate Australia Day at Ku-ring-gai Council’s free event at Bicentennial Park West Pymble, with music, dance and food. The celebrations will start at 5pm and will include inflatable rides, children’s art and craft workshops, roaming performers, Indigenous smoking ceremony, bush band and a Aussie Rock Finale The Great Southern Land. Food and drink stall will also be there

Australia Day Celebrations at Storey Park Oval, Asquith

Celebrate Australia Day at Storey Park Oval, Asquith with 4 hours of great stage entertainment including a special Indigenous performance by David Barnett & Guringai Culture, Aussie bush folk music from family trio Highly Strung. There will also be Bollywood, Chinese and other cultural performances as well as a special appearance by the children and young people of Famous Performing Arts.

Activities for the kids include rock climbing wall, giant screamer mega water slide, soccer darts, basketball shootout and of course a jumping castle, face painting and lots more!

Australia Day at The Concourse will have activities and fun to keep the family entertained

Welcome our new citizens to Willoughby, hear a keynote speech from our Australia Day ambassador and congratulate the Australia Day award winners, including the Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Environmental Citizen of The Year and the Community and Cultural Building Award.

Rise with the sun and celebrate the world’s oldest living culture at Walumil Lawns at Barangaroo Reserve

Sydney Harbour


Sydney Harbour will come alive this Australia Day as large crowds gather around Circular Quay, Dawes Point, The Rocks and other vantage points to witness the activities on and above the water. Highlights include:

  • Ferrython (10.45am–11.30am) See our beloved ferries in this hugely popular Australia Day tradition, as they voyage from Barangaroo Wharf to Shark Island and then back to a glorious finish at the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
  • Salute to Australia (11.30am–12.05pm) The Australian Army, Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Air Force combine to deliver a stirring military ceremony. The event features HMAS Canberra on the water, a 21-gun salute on land and RAAF fast jets flying in formation above Sydney Harbour. Join Australians young and old to hear the Governor’s Address and to sing our national anthem.
  • Tug and Yacht Ballet (12.05pm–12.15pm) Watch a graceful company of yachts, tugboats, jet-skis and ferries glide in precision across the water, accompanied by helicopters above, in an epic piece of musical magic.

Australia Day Live, Sydney Opera House

Enjoy music on the steps of the Opera House

Watch some of Australia’s best artists perform on the Sydney Opera House Forecourt stage, accompanied by a cavalcade of performing jet-skis, fly-boarders and dancing yachts on the water at Circular Quay. A ballot will open on 15 January for tickets.  Subscribe to the Australia Day Newsletter to be notified when tickets are released

Darling Harbour 

Celebrate Australia  Day with a fantastic line up of free entertainment at Darling Harbour

  • Multicultural Stage, Harbourside 12pm – 8pm
    Eenjoy a fantastic line-up of multicultural live entertainment programmed by Settlement Services International (SSI). SSI’s vibrant and innovative arts and cultural program celebrates the creative work of artists and makers from refugee and migrant backgrounds.
  • Tumbalong Entertainment 3pm – 6pm, live entertainment and roving performers 6.30pm – 9.30pm, Australia Day Official Concert screening
    Tumbalong Park’s main stage will feature acoustic musicians and DJs, while roving performers – including giant bouncing kangaroos! Come evening there’ll be a live broadcast of the official Australia Day concert.
  • CircusWorks, 11am – 3pm, Tumbalong Park
    Pedal your heart out on a unicycle, try your hand at juggling, learn how to spin plates, test your balance on sky-high stilts, and get your hula hoop twirling. 
  • True Blue Bush Games, 11am – 3pm, Village Green South
    A hilarious line-up of fun and games will let the whole family show off their uniquely Aussie skills. Munch your way to victory in a watermelon eating competition or take on the challenge of who can throw their thongs the farthest. Grab your family and friends and hurl, heave and hoist the rope to win the Tug-o-War Competition.

    Australia Day Events 2020: North Ryde, Parramatta and more suburbs

    North Ryde Common

    Join the community to celebrate Australia Day at the City of Ryde’s annual family concert at North Ryde Common from 5.00pm to 9.00pm. There will be rides, sports, food trucks and a great line up of entertainment, ending with a spectacular firework display.

    Northern Beaches

    There will be BBQ Breakfasts, thong throwing, face painting, live entertainment at Dee Why, Narrabeen and Newport. The Warringah Aquatic Centre and Manly Andrew ‘Boy’ Charlton Aquatic Centre will host pool parties with a kids DJ, inflatable thong racing competitions and plenty more!

    The Entrance Waterfront

    Australia Day Celebrations at The Entrance is a fun and free event that celebrates all things AustralianThere will be free kid’s activities, an official ceremony, Ducks For Bucks and an ice cream eating competition. An array of local musicians will perform during the day and a headline performer Ross Wilson will lead us into a spectacular firework display over the water. You will also be entertained by support acts: The House Band; One Hit Wonders; Tourmaline Duo; and Tuggerah Lakes Show Band.
