I can’t tell you how many times I’ve driven past the sign for the Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden on Mona Vale Road, and wondered what they were all about. So, in my quest to get to know new areas on the North Shore, I dragged my family to check them out on a sunny day. And what a gorgeous area it is!
Firstly, entry is free. Once you pass the main gates, you can either park to the left or turn right and park near the Bushland Education Centre. We randomly chose the latter, so after parking and unpacking the kids, we started our exploration (well, as much you can with a 1 and 3 year old in tow). We started off walking along the boardwalk above a big pond and then continued 300m (10-15 mins, at a very slow pace!) along a bushy and rocky track (Banks Track) and were delighted to stumble across an area called Lamberts Clearing. It was a lovely open grassed area, complete with a great playground, benches, picnic tables, toilets and electric BBQ. For a beautiful sunny Sunday, it was very quiet (there was only one other family there). The girls loved having the playground to themselves, and we finished with a picnic on the grass. Delightful!
If you’ve got older kids who like bushwalking, there are eight walking tracks – the most challenging is apparently the Mueller Track (which is 3km). The Senses Track (which is on your left when you drive in, so park at the first carpark) is pram-friendly, so perfect if you have a baby but want to get back to nature!
We’ll definitely be going back. Looks like a great spot for a get together with friends and family, and next time we may even pack some sausages for the BBQ…
