5 FREE (or super cheap) family events at Sydney Festival

It’s the annual event that makes our city come alive with incredible events, exhibits, installations and performances – and now Sydney Festival is underway! We’ve put together a list of fun, free things that will be an amazing experience for everyone in the family. Try all of them (and more!) before the festival finishes up on 29 January.

1. Opera in the Domain

Take in the magnificent voices of members of the Australian Opera and the Australian Ballet Orchestra as they perform arias under the stars. Take a picnic blanket and a sumptuous feast for the family, or take advantage of the bars and stalls on site.

2. The Beach Art Installation at Barangaroo

Great for bigger kids, and teenagers The Beach is a crazy art installation immersive experience made  of 1.1 million recyclable polyethylene balls, poured into a pit to make a 60-metre wide ocean! You’re allowed to ‘take a dip’ in any of the ticketed sessions in January (all-ages ticket session or the 18+ only sessions on Friday and Saturday evenings) or just turn up and try your luck!

3. Circus For Everyone – Hang Around with Aerialize!

circusThese free circus skills workshops are a chance for everyone to have a go at running away with the circus! The program offers sessions for tiny tots, kids, adults, seniors and people living with disabilities. Learn the three main aerial apparatus – the trapeze, lyra (aerial hoop) and tissu (or silks), acrobatics, acrobalance, handstands, hula hoops and juggling and more.

5. Ferrython

ferrySydney Festival’s annual Australia Day extravaganza on Sydney Harbour! See the magnificent ferries floating by in this Australia Day tradition, as they venture from Circular Quay to Shark Island and then back to a glorious finish at the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Pack a picnic and gather on the foreshore to barrack for your favourite ferry.
  • Cost: Free, or for a fee you can be a passenger on a ferry for the crossing
