Hornsby Westfield shopping centre was evacuated on Tuesday morning around 10am. Alarms sounded inside the building as people were advised to exit immediately.
Witnesses at the scene described seeing people- including women with prams and elderly shoppers- gathering outside at the famous fountain in the precinct’s centre.
Shortly afterwards an announcement was made that the situation had been brought under control and it was safe to return.
This is the second alarm to sound in the centre this week.
One shopper commented, “with everything that’s going on in the world at the moment, these alarms can be really unsettling.
“Everyone seemed to remain calm, but there was a good 20 minutes where we didn’t know what was happening, so I’m sure thoughts of terrorism was at the back of everyone’s minds.”
