With so many hairdressers on the North Shore, it’s tricky to know who to see. Hair is so personal – it can completely change how you look and how long it takes you to get ready in the morning. In light of this, we’ve road tested JB’s Hair Design, a salon nestled in Rohini Street in Turramurra since 1984.
As a busy mum of three and a business owner, I want a fuss-free but stylish do without the up-keep. I also insist on being blonde, because I was blonde when I was three and I refuse to give it up. Not too much to ask, right?
For someone like me, finding the right salon is crucial – and even though I’m associated with JB’s and have worked with them, I’m still a hard marker when it comes to the little details and having that perfect salon experience.
At JB’s, it’s the little things make a difference. As mums, were always time-poor, so it’s perfect that there’s a car park right behind the salon. The staff and stylists offer a warm and friendly welcome when you arrive – there’s no hoity-toity attitude here! Even when you’re seated, there’s a designated bag hook by the chair (‘yay’ to not having to put my bag on the floor!). You’re immediately put at ease, and that’s before you’re offered the menu which lists everything from fresh espresso coffee and organic tea through to a glass of bubbles.
By this point I was starting to feel a wave of relaxation wash over me. My stylist chatted to me about what I would like – what’s worked and not worked for my styles in the past and my hopes for this visit, so I felt I was in an expert’s hands.
I perused the pile of magazines I was given and settled in with the latest edition of Who, while my stylist got to work applying the foils. There was general noise of happy chatter and music wafting around the salon, as the stylists all busily worked away on their various clients. There was a real range of people from men, women, a high schooler and an elderly lady most likely having her weekly curl and set.
After carefully checking my colour, I was then taken to the basins. Having a head massage at the hairdressers is up there with one of my favourite things and I wasn’t disappointed. It was heaven.
After another offer of something else from the menu, it was time for the cut. My stylist suggested a reverse bob style, to remove a lot of bulk (ticking the low maintenance box) leaving the front longer creating a nice stylish shape. This was a great idea as I naturally have thick, curly hair, which is generally hard to control.
We chatted as she expertly chopped away, and after assessing her work and making sure I was happy with the new length, she proceeded with the blow-dry. Back to my second cappuccino and the latest on Brad and Ange’s divorce, as my hair was skillfully dried into shape.
After asking about managing the colour between visits, I was recommended a couple of products but with no pressure to purchase them although I did buy some Unite Seven Seconds Refresher.
JB’s was originally started by Jo Nicol back in 1984, however she’s since sold it to her protégés Larissa and Ashleigh, sisters who have been her long-term associates. With a total team of six stylists, they are Goldwell colour specialists, always staying on top of trending techniques.
I’ve been to a few other up-market salons in the surrounding suburbs so was bracing myself for the price, but was pleasantly surprised to find JB’s was slightly more cost-effective than what I’d previously paid elsewhere. I readily made my next appointment, very happy with my new blonde bob.
